Veterinary Assistant Program


This 150-hour Veterinary Assistant program prepares the student to enter the field of veterinary medicine. Veterinary Assistants assist both Veterinary Technicians and Veterinarians in the care of animals. The curriculum’s content of knowledge is aligned with NAVTA’s “Essential Skills for Assistant Training” a national certifying agency for Veterinary Assistants.

Course Content includes:

• Office and Hospital Procedures
• Communication and Client Relations
• Pharmacy and Pharmacology ~ Medical Terminology
• Examination Room Procedures
• Animal Care & Nursing
• Surgical Preparation and Assisting
• Laboratory Procedures
• Diagnostic Imaging

In addition the course will provide the opportunity for the student to become “Pet First Aid/ CPR Certified” and obtain certification for “Certified Weight Coach” through Purina Veterinary Diets and complete a 50 hour externship to gain real world experience.
Upon completion of the program students are eligible to become certified through MedCA visit (WCCC student testing fee discount available).

Career Pathway Opportunities

WCCC in partnership with St. Petersburg College, Florida provides students with the opportunity to earn their AS Degree in Veterinary Technology (Veterinary Technician) online distance program. WCCC students completing the Veterinary Assistant Program with a “B” or better are eligible to earn “Free Credit” for two of the required courses in the degree program.

According to the Occupational Handbook the demand for professional veterinary assistants has a 10% growth rate (as fast as average) from 2014 – 2024. Places of employment include: veterinary facilities, animal hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, animal shelters, and animal laboratories.

Educational Requirements:  High School Diploma or GED, 18 years of age or older, strong math skills and love of animals.
