Uniform Construction Code Programs

The following Uniform Construction Code courses are for general contractors who are seeking to advance their careers and become New  Jersey State Inspectors for local municipalities. Licensing questions should be directed to the Licensing Unit at (609) 984-7834, where you can obtain a licensing application packet. It is suggested that you review this packet before you take the course. Tuition reimbursement may be available.

Classes must follow RCS, ICS, HHS sequence. The Uniform Construction Code Act and Regulations or “Blue Book” is a required text for any and all Uniform Construction Code Courses.

Please contact the DCA’s Publications Unit at (609) 984-0040 to order books.  Courses are offered in live remote format and students must have a computer with a speaker and microphone, and a valid email address. Please note:  After successfully completing the required courses,  contractors also need to pass National Exams. 

BUILDING INSPECTOR RCS

This 90-hour course prepares the student for the license of  Building Inspector for Class III residential buildings that conform to the Uniform Construction Code.

BUILDING INSPECTOR ICS

This 75-hour course prepares students for the license of  Building Inspector for Class II commercial buildings that conform to the Uniform Construction Code requirements.  Prerequisites: Building Inspector(RCS).

CONSTRUCTION OFFICIAL

This course is designed to satisfy the education requirements for licensure for Construction Official. It provides the background of technical and administrative knowledge to effectively enforce the Uniform Construction Code at the local level.

ELECTRICAL INSPECTOR ICS (CTC606)

This 60-hour course prepares the student to serve as Electrical Protection Inspector for Class 1 and all other structures as established in N.J.A.C. 5:23-3

FIRE PROTECTION INSPECTOR ICS PART I (CTC602)

This course is designed to satisfy the educational requirements for mastery of the Fire Protection Sub-code for residential and small commercial structures. The course is based on the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code and the International Building Code. It covers techniques for plan re-view, materials testing, field inspection, and report writing. It is Part I of a two-part 120-hour course required for licensure as Fire Protection Inspector ICS. Textbook information will be provided in the first class session.

FIRE PROTECTION INSPECTOR ICS PART II (CTC603)

This course covers techniques for plan review and field inspection of fire protection systems and electrical systems. It is a detailed study of the NJ UCC and International Building Code, focusing on its relation to fire prevention. It is Part II of the 120-hour course required for licensure as a Fire Protection Inspector. Prerequisite: Grade of “C” or better in Part I.

SUBCODE OFFICIAL (CTC610)

This course satisfies the official requirements for NJ State Licensure as Uniform Construction Code Enforcement Sub Code Official. The course covers in detail the administrative background and procedures of the office, the legal aspects of code enforcement, and related legislation.

TECHNICAL ASSISTANT TO THE CONSTRUCTION OFFICIAL (CTC617)

A 15-week session that will satisfy the state requirements for a certificate as a Technical Assistant to the Construction Code Official. You will learn about the Uniform Construction Code administration and law.
