Summer Youth Enrichment

Our Summer Youth Enrichment Programs offer a fun, challenging environment for your child. These programs provide an educational and stimulating alternative to traditional camp, combining learning with creative hands-on experience.

July 22-July 25, 2019

MOTORIZED LEGO® MAKER MACHINES (AGES 7-12) YOU624A0 All Lego, all machines, most – motorized. LEGO enthusiasts, have fun building and designing a wide variety of machines and mechanisms that will help to solve everyday problems! Each day our students will be given one or more real-world or simulated problems. Students will then design and construct solutions to these problems using a wide assortment of motorized Lego mechanisms. At the same time, students will learn about machines, gears, robotics, forces and motion, physics concepts, and more. Have fun working with a team, solving real-world problems, and building a wide assortment of unique Lego projects! All students will take home a LEGO project designed and made in class. Please bring a snack and drink.

MAKE YOUR FIRST VIDEO GAME! (AGES 8-14) YOU659A0 If you love playing video games, this is the camp for you! Make your first video game in this one-of-a-kind class that shows you the keys to designing your first 2D platformer game. Conceptualization, play experience, level design, graphics, sounds, and simple coding are just some of the concepts that we’ll explore. No prior experience necessary, just a desire to have fun. Student-created games will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Games are only compatible on PC computers, Mac versions can be created after the program for $15.00 conversion fee. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Returning students can create more advanced projects that build on previous years. Please bring a snack and drink.

AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE FOR KIDS (AGES 8-12) YOU689A0 Are you interested in learning a “secret” language or want to learn to “talk” without saying a word? Then, this is the program for you! Join us to learn American Sign Language. Students will learn basics such as the manual alphabet, numbers 1-50, greetings, phrases, jokes, and basic vocabulary including food, family, and play. Please bring a snack and drink.

NEW! DRONES & FLYING PHYSICS (AGES 8-12) YOU624B0 Take to the skies with mini drones. quadcopters, and more! Housing a thrilling, hands-on aerial robotics platform, this program is the perfect introduction to the world of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Safety is a priority as students learn to fly in first-person view (FPV), exploring the real-world applications of drones. Students go through Droneology, the online drone education platform, master basic piloting skills, construct an obstacle course to fly through and stage a final race to showcase their cumulative knowledge. Putting critical thinking to the test, the program also has students brainstorm ways drones could be used for good, sketching out their ideas for new and innovative drones and drone uses. All students will take home their own mini-drone and flying gadgets made in class. (Mini-drones do not require a permit. Students can fly them both indoors as well as outdoors.) Please bring a snack and drink.

VIDEO GAME ANIMATION (AGES 8-14) YOU676A0 Take your game design skills to the next level by creating and animating your own character sprites, objects, and backgrounds. Start with a name, develop the character’s personality, signature moves, special powers, and a storyline. Finish with a fully animated character to be used in your very own game. Students do not need any prior experience in game design, animation, or sketching. Student-created games will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. THE PLAYHOUSE ACTING WORKSHOP (AGES 9–13) YOU639A0 Children with all levels of acting experience are invited to come to enjoy the fun as we explore the world of theatre. Learn all about the stage, costumes, makeup, and musicals, how to create characters, learn lines and blocking, and how to make an audience laugh. Material fee of $15 is payable to the instructor on the first day of class. Please bring a snack, drink, and lunch. 

SUPER SCIENCE STEM CHALLENGES (AGES 7-12) YOU673A0 Discover the excitement of science and make a variety of toys designed to illustrate science concepts that make learning fun. Most of the projects can be taken home as they are made throughout the week. Make your own working telescope as you learn about the optics of light. Construct an electro-magnet and a working electric motor. Build an adjustable, ball-launching catapult that changes the trajectory of a flinging projectile. Create a working model of Hero Alexandria’s fountain or vortex tornado in a bottle. Make ultra-violet bead bracelets, a working compass, submarine divers, and more. Projects will vary by age level and instructions will be taught in more depth for older students. Please bring a snack and drink.

NEW! PYTHON PROGRAMMERS (AGES 8-14) YOU690A0 Want to learn the world’s fastest-growing programming language favored by Google, NASA, YouTube, and the CIA? Learn how to code with Python to create engaging apps and games. Each lesson takes you step-by-step on a programming path that will let you challenge friends with fun content you create from start to finish! Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Please bring a snack and drink.

BATTLE-BOT BUILD-A-THON (AGES 7-12) Have fun building and creating using your imagination. Campers will construct a complex Battle-Bot robot from our huge Robotix modular collection. Enjoy working together to build a robot that can clobber its opponent in our sumo-style robot ring. Make your robot as huge and destructive as you’d like as the goal of this competition is to flip your opponent over, pull pieces off, or ram it right out of the arena. Then get ready to modify your design to compete in our robot tug of war, Olympic competition, soccer match, and more. Campers will learn engineering principles in a fun, hands-on atmosphere. All campers will take home a Hexbug Warrior. Please bring a snack and drink.

NEW! VIRTUAL REALITY: THE FUTURE IS NOW (AGES 8-14) YOU691A0 Embark on an EPIC adventure in virtual reality! In this cutting-edge class, you will learn the foundations of VR design by creating your own virtual worlds, exploring simulated environments, and crafting memorable 3D experiences. At the end of the week, take home your first cardboard VR headset to show friends and family the new worlds you created. VR projects can be viewed on a website or a mobile device. Students do not need a mobile device to take the class, but to use the VR headset a camper will need access to an Android or Apple mobile device. Students will work in pairs or teams and VR projects will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. There is an additional $19 lab fee for the VR headset. Please bring a snack and drink.

BATTLE-BOT BUILD-A-THON (AGES 7-12) Have fun building and creating using your imagination. Campers will construct a complex Battle-Bot robot from our huge Robotix modular collection. BABYSITTING BASICS (AGES 12–15) YOU622A0 Boys and girls will learn how to market themselves as a sitter and become familiar with age-appropriate activities, safety basics, and babysitting etiquette. Pediatric First Aid overview is included as part of this program. This does not include certification. Please bring a snack and drink.

NEW! BATTLE ROYALE: MAKE YOUR FIRST FORTNITE ® STYLE VIDEO GAME (AGES 8-14) YOU692A0 Fans of Fortnite we need you! Instead of playing the game, design your own. Using a professional 3D game development software, build levels and assets inspired by popular battle royale games like Fortnite. This course includes cartoonish action and battle sequences. Student-created games will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Please bring a snack and drink.

LEGO® STAR WARS & MOTORIZED MACHINES (AGES 7-12) YOU624E0 LEGO enthusiasts, have fun building your favorite adventure from a Star Wars galaxy that is far, far away. Star Wars projects will vary depending on availability from LEGO® headquarters but will include age-appropriate new models and the best of some of the older models. Campers will also build a wide assortment of non-Star War motorized LEGO® Education machines and create their own projects that illustrate science concepts. This is a stimulating enrichment program and not geared as a teacher-driven education class. All campers will take home a LEGO® Star Wars project. Please bring a snack and drink.

NEW! ADVENTURES IN AUGMENTED REALITY! (AGES 8-14) YOU693A0 Watch as holograms come to life in the first-ever augmented reality for kids! Students will work in cutting-edge software to create holographic scenes that are viewable with a smartphone and a magic futuristic cube. Student-created projects will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. There is an additional $19 lab fee for the magic cube and license. Please bring a snack and drink.

Aug 12–Aug 15, 2019

CHEMICAL WIZARDRY (AGES 7–12) YOU624F0 Get ready for a fun-filled “magical” laboratory experience Harry Potter style. Enjoy making Flubber, Silly Putty, Super Hi-Bounce balls, and more. Have fun making carbon dioxide “bomb” bag, the light inside of a glow bottle, a mushroom monster, play dough, Glowing Goo, and even a tIe-dye shirt. We will create atomic worm polymers and lava lamp-like blobs. We will also demonstrate the Big Bang Cannon, diet Coke and Mentos Geyser, Magic Genie in a bottle, and more. All campers will take home a mini-chemistry kit & recipe booklet. Please bring a 100% white cotton T-shirt for the second class. Please bring a snack and drink.

NEW! ROBLOX ® MAKERS (AGES 8-14) YOU694A0 Unlock the power of ROBLOX ® Studio, the world creation tool used by real-world ROBLOX® developers! Learn how to build 3D models and create an adventure in your ROBLOX ® world. Bring characters to life with unique animations you design. ROBLOX® CODERS & ENTREPRENEURS! (AGES 8-14) YOU688A0 Discover how to code in the Lua language while playing and designing worlds in ROBLOX®, an online universe where you can create anything you dream of. This new class combines game design concepts, coding, and fun! Young entrepreneurs will also learn how to navigate ROBLOX’s fast-growing marketplace to publish their games. Student-created games will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program.
