Legal Assistant Program
The Associate in Applied Science Degree in Legal Studies is designed to provide educational background for employment as a legal assistant in a variety of paralegal positions. Emphasis is placed on torts, contracts, real estate, domestic relations, civil litigation, criminal concepts, trial and administrative practice/ procedure, litigation procedures, legal research, and preparation of legal documents. Internships are available with State offices and are strongly encouraged.
Employment opportunities in the legal assisting field are expected to increase, with private law firms remaining the largest employers. Employment in the corporate sector and with public and governmental entities has experienced substantial increases. Paralegals may not give legal advice and must work under the supervision of an attorney.
