BJ Ward is the author of four books of poetry, most recently Jackleg Opera: Collected Poems 1990-2013 (North Atlantic Books), which received the Paterson Award for Literary Excellence. His poems have appeared in Poetry, American Poetry Review, TriQuarterly, The New York Times, and The Sun, among others, and have been featured on NPRâ€™s â€śThe Writerâ€™s Almanac,â€ť NJTVâ€™s â€śState of the Arts,â€ť and the website Poetry Daily. He is the recipient of a Pushcart Prize and two Distinguished Artist Fellowships from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. Recent appearances included The Geraldine R. Dodge Poetry Festival, University of Delaware, Rutgers (New Brunswick) Writersâ€™ Conference, Monmouth Universityâ€™s Bruce Springsteen Symposium, Lewes Writersâ€™ Conference, the Princeton Public Library, and The Stanhope House. In a piece entitled â€ś10 Dynamic Jersey Artists Not Named Springsteen,â€ť The Star-Ledger cited Ward as a â€śmaster teacherâ€ť whose work was â€śmaking a difference,â€ť noting his poetryâ€™s â€śmusic and physicality.â€ť Recently, he was the recipient of the Presidentâ€™s Merit Award at the Warren County (NJ) Hall of Fame Induction Celebration.
As a teacher, Mr. Ward has received the Governorâ€™s Award in Arts Education from the State of New Jersey and has been designated Distinguished Teaching Artist by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. Mr. Ward was also named Teaching Artist of the Year by Playwrightsâ€™ Theatre of New Jersey for his work in the New Jersey Writers Project. For three years he served as the Poetry Instructor at the New Jersey Governorâ€™s School for the Arts. He has taught at The Controlled Burn Seminar for Younger Writers, held on the shore of Higgins Lake, Michigan, and at the Frost Place Seminar for Young Poets at Robert Frostâ€™s homestead in Franconia, New Hampshire. He also works for the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation as a Visiting Poet and Tending the Spring/Clearing the Fountain Group Leader. He is the recipient of the NISOD Excellence Award at Warren County Community College, where he works throughout the year as a Professor of English & Creative Writing. In 2019, he taught in the Creative Writing program at Lafayette College as a part-time instructor. In August 2020, he will serve as a guest lecturer in DeSales Universityâ€™s MFA in Creative Writing program. His website is bj-ward.com.
